Description :
Cranesbill grows either in a mound or as a clump of multiple single-stalk plants. Regardless of growth pattern, the stems and leaves are slightly hairy and the leaves are deeply serrated and lobed with 5 lobes each. Cranesbill grows best in lightly shaded areas under high treetops. The flowers are pale pink to lavender. A seed pod forms whose shape resembles a crane’s bill. In the summer, these seed pods explode and send seeds everywhere.The Native Americans used teas made of Cranesbill help ease diarrhea. They used it externally to helping to stop bleeding.
History and Folklore:
Cranesbill is a member of the Geranium family. The word Geranium comes from the Greek geranos meaning “crane” The Wild Geranium rhizome is rich in tannins and was used by native Americans to tan hides.
Cultivation and Harvest:
Harvest the roots and areal parts of the plant in the autumn just before they would have turned brown. The areal parts and roots can be dried and ground to make teas and tinctures.
Precautions:
Do not use if pregnant or nursing. Generally, it is best not to take Cranesbill for more than three weeks at a time.
